Renishaw Hall

The mercurial polymath, Sir George Sitwell 4^th Bt created the Grade II* listed park and gardens between 1886-1889, in collaboration with his cousin Francis Inigo Thomas. Ornamental ponds, a spectacular fountain, secret garden rooms, follies, classical statues, overflowing borders and long vistas all feature strongly in the tranquil formal gardens.  Beyond these the Wilderness, woodland and lakes provide quite a different atmosphere and the historic bluebell woods will be in full flower in April.  The gardens and landscape inspired the writings of the Sitwell literary trio – Edith, Osbert and Sacheverell – and the work of the artist John Piper. Renishaw’s unique fusion of art, literature and landscape design leaves a lasting impression, as described by artist Rex Whistler as “the most exciting place I know”. The day started with refreshments, followed by tours of the garden and the house. A full illustrated report will be available shortly.
