YGT AGM at Sledmere House & Gardens

Sledmere, Driffield, East Yorkshire, YO25 3XG
Gardens at Sledmere

Description

Our AGM took place in the Coach House Conference facility at Sledmere and was followed by an illustrated talk Sledmere: The Making of the Landscape‘ by David Neave.

During the afternoon, there was the opportunity to explore the landscape with David.

The pleasure grounds and parkland at Sledmere were laid out in two stages from the mid-18th century.  Most significant was the contribution of Sir Christopher Sykes, 2nd baronet, who created an ‘improved’ landscape with advice from Thomas White and Lancelot “Capability” Brown, 1776-1801.  Sykes cleared away the remnants of the village, designed model farms as eyecatchers from the house and planted 1000 acres of trees.
