Snowdrops

Description

Burton Agnes Hall was designed by Robert Smythson, Master Mason to Queen Elizabeth 1, and built 1601-10 by Sir Henry Griffith, 1st Baronet.

Today, the estate is owned by the Burton Agnes Preservation Trust and is managed by Simon Cunliffe-Lister. The Woodland Walk to the north of the house in woodland gardens first planted in the 18th century was formed in 1989 for Simon’s 21st birthday and the 400th centenary of the Hall. His mother Susan Cunliffe-Lister designed the Walled Garden to combine the two Elizabethan ages, using ideas of the first Elizabethans and materials and plants available today. There are many thousand snowdrops of a single, native variety (Nivalis).
