Baldersby Park

Baldersby Park, Topcliffe YO7 3BZ
Baldersby Park

Description

Baldersby Park was previously known as Newby Park and is not on Historic England’s Register but has been extensively researched by YGT’s Louise Wickham who will kindly lead the afternoon for us. We will begin by gathering in the Library at Queen Mary’s School from 12.30pm when coffee/tea will be available. Louise will give a short introductory talk at 1pm before we go outside to look at the setting of the house and the front gardens. Crossing the park in front of the House to the school playing fields boundary we will be met by Mr Tim Webster and his daughter Rachel who farm much of the historic area where we will see the Fish Pond/Canal and Obelisk, Deer Shelter and boundary woodland walks.

Baldersby Park has been shaped by its owners over 200 years to reflect their desire to provide a suitable setting for the House built between 1718 and 1730 for Sir William Robinson. Nurserymen, London and Wise provided trees, and George London may have advised on the design. Later Adam Mickle II worked at Baldersby from 1780 until 1793 and Joseph Paxton was commissioned to redesign the kitchen garden for George Hudson, the railway tycoon in the 1840’s.  This is a fascinating historic park and garden, and we are very fortunate to have the benefit of Louise’s knowledge and to be able to have a visit when pupils are not at school and fit around the preparations and clearing up associated with the Deer Shed Festival.

Louise Wickham’s report is online - https://www.yorkshiregardenstrust.org.uk/index.php/research/sites/baldersby-park#info
