The original Sedbury Hall dated from the 15th century and had a small park attached to it. Following the acquisition of the estate by the Darcy family, both the hall and the grounds were developed most notably in the 3rd quarter of the 18th century by Robert D'Arcy Hildyard. He engaged the landscape designer, Thomas White, to lay out the grounds. Although William Sawrey Gilpin advised on improvements to a later owner, John Gilpin, in the 1830s and 1840s, little was done to the designed landscape. Today it remains largely unchanged with the 1780s layout legible.
