The designed landscape developed alongside the building of a new Bishop’s Palace in Ripon in the 1830s is largely the work of Charles Thomas Longley, Bishop of Ripon from 1836 to 1856. Around the new residence for the bishops an area of parkland was laid out, as well shelter belts and pleasure gardens and a walled kitchen garden was developed.

Bolton Hall was built by 1678 and its associated gardens and parkland had been established by 1723. The designed landscape was modified in the style of Brown in the late 18th century.

A municipal park laid out in the 1870s over a former sandstone quarry, associated with Boston Castle, a shooting lodge built in 1775.

Botanical gardens laid out 1834-6 by Robert Marnock with contemporary conservatories by B B Taylor.

A public park opened in 1880 with additional features added in the early C20.

The designed landscape at Boynton retains elements of three main periods of activity from the early 18th to early 19th century. The plantations cover much the same area as they did in the mid 19th century. The surviving garden (banqueting) house of c. 1600, the early 18th-century bridge, and the mid-late 18th century dairy, Fond Bridge and Carnaby Temple are particularly significant and rare in the East Riding.

Pleasure grounds and park laid out during the period c 1700-13, with additions by John Wood the Elder of c 1725-8 for Robert Benson, first Lord Bingley.

The parkland at Brantinghamthorpe is a good example of a modest planned landscape of the early 19th century, but of particular historical significance are the remnants of the Victorian formal gardens laid out for visits of the Prince of Wales.
